The San Miguel Beermen shocked semifinal opponent Rain or Shine after coming back from a 20-point fourth quarter deficit to draw first blood, 109-105, in their SMART BRO PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven playoff series on Tuesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
San Miguel outscored Rain or Shine 38-14 in a one-sided fourth quarter to come away with a surprising victory in a game in which they trailed by as many as 22 points.

Back-to-back PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo led the way for the Beermen, finishing with a monster line of 36 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks.
Arwind Santos also had a huge double-double with 19 points and 17 boards while Ronald Tubid finished with 15 markers, 11 of those in the fourth quarter including two huge three-pointers in the clutch.
Rain or Shine’s offense was unstoppable in the first half as they put 68 big points over the first two periods.
The sweet-shooting big men of the Elasto Painters gave the Beermen fits as Beau Belga scored 16 points and JR Quinahan added 15 from off the bench at the halfway point of the game. The pair went 13-for-17 (76%) from the field and combined for four three-pointers.
That was enough to give Rain or Shine a whopping 18-point lead, 68-50, despite a huge performance from Fajardo, who led all scorers with 19 markers although his San Miguel teammates could only muster a 36% shooting clip.
They mounted a huge 19-4 run in the first quarter to open up a huge lead, 27-12, before finishing the opening period with a double-digit lead.
The Elasto Painters pushed the lead to as high as 22 points, 68-46, late in the first half after Belga finished on back-to-back baskets in transition.
The game heated up in the third quarter resulting in an altercation that saw both benches getting whistled for technical fouls and Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao garnering one as well.
That incident seemed to fire up the Beermen as they went on an 11-4 run to close in to within 11 points, 76-65. They were able to get as close as 10 points but the Elasto Painters rattled off 10 unanswered points to push the lead up to 20, 91-71, late in the period.
Jericho Cruz gave Rain or Shine a lift, scoring five points – two on the break and three on a long range bomb – to lead the charge.
After the huge first half, Rain or Shine scored only 23 in the third but still outscored San Miguel by two.
San Miguel again made a run in the fourth slicing their deficit down to 12 points, 95-83.
But Paul Lee, playing in his first game after suffering an injury before the start of the season, then scored his first points of the conference, knocking a three-pointer that put the margin up to 15 yet again.
The Beermen would not be slowed, though, continuing to storm right back into the game. Tubid hit back-to-back triples to shove his team to within two points, 100-98, as SMB went on a 27-9 run to start the fourth.
Lee again attempted to stem the tide, connecting on a second three-pointer to make it a five-point contest, 103-98, with 4:04 still to play.
But Santos hit a three-pointer and Fajardo scored four straight points as San Miguel finally overtook Rain or Shine, 105-103. Lee nailed a huge basket, following his own missed attempt but Chris Ross knocked down another triple to make it 108-105 for the Beermen with 1:32 left.
