Game 6 Rain or Shine vs San Miguel result, recap, score Jan 15, 2016 Philippine Cup. SMB survives loss of MVP Fajardo, KOs Rain or Shine in Game 6 to advance to PBA Finals.
The San Miguel Beermen lost reigning back-to-back MVP June Mar Fajardo to injury in the third quarter but still had enough to close out Rain or Shine, 90-82, in Game 6 to advance to the SMART BRO PBA Philippine Cup finals on Friday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
June Mar Fajardo exited the game at 7:11 mark of the third quarter with 14 points and 12 rebounds but San Miguel found plenty of heroes willing to step up in his absence.
Marcio Lassiter finished with 22 points while Arwind Santos had 15 points and 19 big rebounds to lead the Beermen back to the championship round.
Rain or Shine trailed by three points at the end of the first period but came out with guns blazing in the second, scoring 12 unanswered points en route to a huge 19-2 run that gave them a 35-21 lead after a triple from Gabe Norwood.
Norwood scored seven of his 10 first half points in that opening run.
The Elasto Painters led by as much as 15 in the first half although they led by just nine, 46-37, at the break.
Jewel Ponferada led all scorers with 12 markers while Fajardo already had close to a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds over the first two periods.
Disaster struck for the Beermen in the third quarter when Fajardo received a hard bump to the lower body from Rain or Shine’s Jireh Ibanes, causing him to collapse onto the floor clutching his left knee.
He needed to be stretchered off the floor at the 7:11 mark of the third.
But that only served to fire up his San Miguel teammates, who went on a 10-3 run behind some three-pointers from Santos and Ronald Tubid and a couple of buckets from Gabby Espinas.
Lassiter then made some big shots – including a three-point play – late to give SMB a nine-point lead but a late jumper from Jericho Cruz trimmed that down to seven, 70-63, heading into the fourth quarter.
San Miguel extended its lead to 15 points, 82-67, in the fourth but needed to weather a big comeback from Rain or Shine, who went on a 12-2 run to close back to within five points.
San Miguel got a break when Espinas drove to the ball, drawing a hard foul and a technical on the Rain or Shine side. Lassiter took care of the technical free throw while Espinas split his charities to make it 86-79 with 54 seconds left.
Belga dragged the Elasto Painters even closer with a split from the free throw line and a perfect trip on his next at-bat from the stripe.
Rain or Shine, though, had no choice fouled Chris Ross on the next possession and the Elasto Painters could not get a three-pointer to fall, leading to a Lassiter breakaway that sealed the win, 90-82.
